Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Founded by visionary choreographer Alvin Ailey in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the world’s most acclaimed dance companies, celebrated for its powerful storytelling, technical brilliance, and cultural impact. Forged during a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement, the Company was established to uplift the African American experience while transcending boundaries of race, faith, and nationality while embracing the universal power of dance.
Mr. Ailey’s groundbreaking vision redefined modern dance, opening doors for diverse artists and preserving important works that might have otherwise been lost. With a repertory that boasts close to 300 works by more than 100 choreographers, the Company has performed in more than 70 countries on six continents and has been designated a “vital American Cultural Ambassador to the World” by a US Congressional resolution. Today, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues to captivate audiences worldwide, expanding its repertory with works by new choreographers while upholding Mr. Ailey’s enduring legacy for future generations.
“Nothing prepares you for the totality of Alvin Ailey: the aural, visual, physical, spiritual beauty…Heaven…Everywhere you looked: sensory pleasure…” –Zadie Smith, The New York Times
